[Update: Well it really sucks that this place closed – it was an undiscovered gem… DAMN YOU 290 construction! *shakes fist in the air*]

No matter where you live, every city has that hunt for the “best burger”. I’ve read all the articles and blogs about “Best Burger in Houston” and I’ve even followed them on my own hunt for that best burger. I was typically left a little disappointed or feeling like I just bathed in a lukewarm deep frier. I have no qualms with a little extra grease by no means, but it seems some folks make this the gold star standard for a burger. It get’s boring. Houston’s burger joints have become homogenized where I want adventure. Like Indiana Jones searching for the lost ark, I was on that quest, and ended up at eT Craft Burgers and Beer.

eT, pronounced “eat”, has recently expanded it’s burger concept out of the tunnels of downtown Houston and brought this American classic full circle. In the tunnels, one thing is left off the menu that brings a great burger combo together… Beer. The interior of this first expansion (Hwy 6 & 290) feels modern, but very comforting at the same time. And it should, it was put together by the same designer of Houston’s beloved Uchi. All the ingredients are fresh, unique, and high quality. The meat is natural, never frozen and flame grilled. Most of the spreads are made fresh daily. My honest-to-goodness first gut feeling was, “these folks know what they’re doing and they want to ensure superior quality”. They’ve successfully taken the traditional burger and made into a 5-star burger joint.

eT will allow you to pick a plain burger, one of their “favorites”, or the joy of crafting your own — with no limit on toppings. My first burger consisted of this highly recommended ensemble:

  • Fresh mozzarella
  • Tomato confit
  • Jalapeños
  • Caramelized onions
  • Grilled red peppers
  • Arugula (I think this is a real secret ingredient)
  • Spreads on each bun: basil pesto, tomato aioli

This was such a truly fantastic burger that the next day I woke up and asked myself…was it an illusion? I had to go back for seconds, but this time I got the guilty pleasures I originally thought would be overpowering:

  • Blue cheese
  • Tomato confit
  • Jalapeños
  • Caramelized onions
  • Arugula
  • Same awesome spreads: basil pesto, tomato aioli

It was not an illusion, it was heavenly bliss.

Bottom line:

  • Nice, cozy, and quality
  • Ingredients are fresh and meat is natural, never frozen
  • Unique toppings and spreads
  • Burgers are outstanding
  • Amazing fries (gotta try the pesto fries)

One last thing, I have to mention – the beer. Instead of buying a pitcher of beer, you buy their “growler” (you can still buy pints). It’s different because you can cap it off when you are done and take the rest home. This is especially awesome because they have such a good selection on tap including the totally legit Oso Bueno from Houston’s newest brewery, 11 Below Brewing Company.

If we’re comparing all the burgers places around… I’ll just say it, eT is the best burger in Houston.
