I have never even heard of mulled wine before Thursday. I actually thought my bud, Dan, was saying “mold wine” when he bestowed this bottle unto me (…damn British accents). So what is it? Mulled wine, or Glühwein, is a German tradition made from red wine that is heated and spiced (cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, citrus and sugar for example) and is drank around the holidays. The tradition can be traced back at least 600 years. This particular bottle, St. Lorenz Christkindl Gluhwein, was found at Spec’s and simply states “just heat and serve”.
The flavor is very festive, I actually really like it! The warmth and the spice is just right for a chilly evening such as tonight. It is very reminiscent of a wassail, but this is “alc. 8.5% by vol”, so its better! 😉
And coming soon, the really fun part. Dan also mentioned he has a good recipe for homemade mulled wine that I will be acquiring from him. Stay tuned for that – and while you are waiting, check out Dan’s band’s site: Amusement Parks on Fire. (cough, cough, ahem…who just had a full page write up in AP magazine!)
Stay thirsty Houston, and get cozy in front of a fire with a warm cup of mulled wine. I plan on making this a yearly holiday tradition from now on. Plan on some tasty homemade brews to come.
